‘Virtuosi’ rehearsed from September 2013 to prepare for our concert at Powderham Castle on 7th March 2014.
Matthew Souter, our Head of Strings at Wells Cathedral School, chose Brahms String Sextet in Bb for us to play, and we really loved getting to know the piece, and receiving much advice from him. With the help of our private teachers, we each prepared a solo work to perform in the first half of this concert, which was very satisfying for us, as we got to perform an entire concert – just the six of us and our accompanist Dr Pick.
It was very exciting when the day arrived – travelling to, rehearsing and performing at Powderham Castle. On top of a great musical experience, it was great fun to be shown around the castle, see secret doorways and a window hidden behind a mirror! Everyone we met at Powderham Castle was very welcoming and looked after us excellently – even providing a delicious supper before our concert.
Performing at the Castle was a fantastic musical experience for all members of our sextet.
It was such a privilege having an opportunity to play and rehearse in the James Wyatt Music Room. The architecture and views surrounding the castle made our concert feel really special, and it was amazing to ‘warm up’ and perform overlooking such beautiful grounds.
It was lovely playing both solo and chamber repertoire to such a supportive audience, and I’d love the chance to perform at Powderham again!
Florence Corr has now left Wells Cathedral School and is a student at The Royal Academy of Music in London.
